What is a B-Boy?

The name breakdancer comes from the fact that in the beginning of hip hop culture the DJs played mostly the heavy drum breakdown or “break” of the funk records at their parties. The break dancers got their name from dancing during these drum “break” portions of the records.

This physical representation of hip hop culture was an athletic almost gymnastic form of dance that is amazing to watch. The B-Boy crews would battle each other at Hip Hop parties to show off their skills and earn bragging rights throughout the 5 burrows of New York. Somehow with the commercialization of rap music the B-Boys have been marginalized in Hip Hop culture. It’s time to get them back in the fold.
